Recommended reading

Our publication (available as an ebook and in printed form) A horse is a horse - of course is a good place to start. This publication will teach you more about horse behaviour.

The Nature of Horses Steven Budiansky (1998)  Orion Books Ltd, London.

The Behaviour of the Horse Fraser AF (1992)  Cab International, UK.

The Behaviour of Horses - in Relation to Management and Training Marthe Kiley-Worthington (1983). Reprinted 1999 and translated into German, Italian, French and Dutch - available from the publisher & author at www.horseridingfrance.com and www.eco-etho-recherche.com. This was one of the first books on horse behaviour written by a scientist who had studied the behaviour of horses, and outlines the fundamentals of their physiology, perception, social organization, communication, breeding etc. It also covers how learning works and discusses whether current horse management maximizes their welfare. It has been perhaps the most influential book in the recent change of attitudes concerning horses management and training.

Equine Behavior Paul McGreevy (2004)  Saunders, Sydney, Australia. scientific and more in depth than some but well worth the read if you understand the terminology.

The Truth about Horses : A Guide to Understanding and Training Your Horse Andrew McLean (2003) www.aebc.com.au. An International Best Seller and a distillation of Andrew McLeans PhD thesis. For the first time ever, a book that reveals the huge potential offered by the behavioural sciences in maximising effectiveness in training for horses and people. Adopting these principles dramatically increases the number of horses that are able to effectively learn what we intend to teach them, no matter what discipline. I have recommended this book in the training section also as it covers both subjects.

Equine Behaviour: Principles and Practice Mills D & Nankervis K (1999)  Blackwell Science, London.

Horse Behaviour Waring GH (1983) Noyes Publications, New Jersey.
