Aids

The signals by which the rider communicates with the horse

All-purpose saddle:

A saddle that is suitable for jumping and flat work riding

Arena:

A flat area that is designed for working a horse. Can be fenced or unfenced.

Good hands

Sensitive, still, educated hands that can feel the horses mouth

Habituation

The horse becomes accustomed to scary sights and sounds through repetition

Hand

Horses are measured from the withers to the ground in hands - a hand equals four inches

Independent seat

The limbs and body can function independently of each other while riding

Learned helplessness

The horse gives up trying out responses and becomes dull and lifeless

Negative reinforcement

The removal of pressure - this removal of the pressure trains the horse

Positive reinforcement

The addition of reward - the horse learns that a reward follows the correct response

Punishment

Occurs after the incorrect response. It says no but it does not help the horse understand
