The responsiblities of training - Jane Myers- added December 2009

Recommended reading list

There are lots and lots of books about horse training. These are my favourites as they make sense to me. They are all Australian trainers. I respect the work of each of these trainers and apart from Tom Roberts (now deceased) I know each of these trainers and have worked with their methods.

Andrew McLean & Manuela McLean (2008) Academic Horse Training : Equitation Science in Practice www.aebc.com.au. Books and DVDs can be purchased from the website. This revolutionary work is the first ever horse training system that is evidence-based (founded on objective, scientific research rather than opinion).

Andrew McLean (2003) The Truth about Horses : A Guide to Understanding and Training Your Horse  www.aebc.com.au. An International Best Seller and a distillation of Andrew McLeans PhD thesis. For the first time ever, a book that reveals the huge potential offered by the behavioural sciences in maximising effectiveness in training for horses and people. Adopting these principles dramatically increases the number of horses that are able to effectively learn what we intend to teach them, no matter what discipline.

John Chatterton (2000) John Chatterton’s Ten Commandments: www.johnchatterton.com.au. John is the inventor of the JR Easy Traveller Float. The book and other merchandise can be purchased from the site.

Steve Brady (2005) Horse Training - Steve Brady's Formula for Success The book and other merchandise can be purchased from Steve’s site www.stevebradyhorsemanship.com where there are also some great articles. Steve is one of Australia and New Zealand’s most respected and requested horsemanship clinicians.

Tom Roberts(1988) Horse Control Series (4 books) Greenhouse Publications: Elwood, Australia. Regarded as the father of Australian horse-psychology, Tom Roberts was a trail blazer and before his time. You will need to search the Internet for these books as I am not aware of a website that is dedicated to them. If you manage to find one, please let us know.
