Recommended reading list

Steven Budiansky (1998) The nature of horses Orion Books Ltd: London.

Fraser AF (1992) The Behaviour of the Horse Cab International: UK.

Marthe Kiley-Worthington (1983) The Behaviour of Horses - in Relation to Management and Training Reprinted 1999, translated into German, Italian, French and Dutch (in process) - available from the publisher & author at: www.horseridingfrance.com. This was the first book on horse behaviour written by a scientist who had studied the behaviour of horses, and outlines the fundamentals of their physiology, perception, social organization, communication, breeding etc. It also covers how learning works and discusses whether current horse management maximizes their welfare. It has been perhaps the most influential book in the recent change of attitudes concerning horses management and training.

Paul McGreevy (2004) Equine Behavior Saunders, Sydney, Australia

Andrew McLean (2003) The Truth about Horses : A Guide to Understanding and Training Your Horse  www.aebc.com.au. An International Best Seller and a distillation of Andrew McLeans PhD thesis. For the first time ever, a book that reveals the huge potential offered by the behavioural sciences in maximising effectiveness in training for horses and people. Adopting these principles dramatically increases the number of horses that are able to effectively learn what we intend to teach them, no matter what discipline.

Mills D & Nankervis K (1999) Equine Behaviour: Principles and Practice Blackwell Science: London.

Waring GH (1983) Horse behaviour Noyes Publications: New Jersey.
