The Donkey Sanctuary
The Donkey Sanctuary is a UK based charity working worldwide to improve conditions for donkeys and mules. The Donkey Sanctuary takes care of and provides permanent security anywhere in the world for donkeys and mules which are in need of attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, poor circumstances, ill-usage or other like causes and the prevention of cruelty and suffering among donkeys and mules.
We visited Slade House Farm in Sidmouth, Devon (UK) in September 2011 and were shown around by Liz Hazell-Smith who works in the Research Department which amongst other things overseas the nutrition research and management of the Donkeys. We had a fascinating time looking at some of the sanctuary donkeys, the excellent facilities and the land. Slade House Farm is just one of several UK farms belonging to the Donkey Sanctuary and the only one open to the public. The day we visited there were coach loads of people arriving for a day out. I had never realised the scale of The Donkey Sanctuary which provides jobs for many local people as well as educating the general public. The Donkey Sanctuary also does very important work overseas which helps working donkeys and their owners who rely on them to make a living in many of the poorer parts of the world.
