Yeguada De La Cartuja
(Spanish Horse Stud - Jerez, Spain)
We visited the Yeguada De La Cartuja (Spanish Horse Stud - Jerez, Spain) in October 2011. It was an equine extravaganza and we managed to get some good photos. The stud does regular tours throughout the summer season. I think it cost about 20 euros each to attend and the whole visit lasted about two and a half hours and included a couple of free sherries at the end! Have look at their website if you are planning on a Southern Spain trip as it is a great place to visit www.yeguadacartuja.com (this link should take you straight to the English version). The stud is quite ancient and therefore has many traditions and is well known throughout the Spanish horse world. The tour was well organised with lots to see - times spent walking around the stud with a guide (there was several guides taking care of all the various languages in attendance). Our guide could not get us out of the breeding shed quickly enough as he fielded (what were to him) embarrassing questions about AI (artificial insemination) so people who had not come across this subject before went out pretty bewildered but it was a good tour non-the-less. There was a period when everyone was seated in the indoor school and various shows were put on for us ranging from dressage to letting the youngsters into the arena to run around, followed by letting the mares in so that they all paired up which was nice to watch (a few teary eyes from some of the more sentimental of our party!).
